An ideal base for the ascent of Acheron is the picturesque fishing village of Ammoudia. Rowing, we see fishing boats, fishing nets and sailing boats lying on the left bank, with the background of local fish taverns.

Leaving behind the small settlement, we invade deeper into the rich ecosystem of the area, experiencing riparian forests with unexpected surprises.

As we pass through the mild waters, hanging nests appear in front of us, while in several places, on the surface of the water and on the surrounding bushy shores, emerge riverworms, small otters and myocastos.

As we go up the river, the shadow of the wild foliage of the willows thickens as we roam under the tangled branches of the trees that create idyllic natural passages.

The sound of the horn, from the small boats that visit the river, warns us of their sudden presence and gives us the pleasant opportunity to exchange friendly greetings and photographs with our young companions until they overtake us.

At some point the river becomes inaccessible and our ascent is completed, having paddled about an hour and twenty minutes.

The way back is now easier and quicker and we can observe the birds of prey that are hunting in the wetland, giving us unique performances.

We finish our excursion back to the estuary of the river, enjoying good service at the local cafes and tavernas, as well as the view of the small picturesque bay with the blue-green waters of the Ionian Sea.
